Curious to learn about your high-school experience, was it epic or did you feel “disqualified”?

The high school experience is not a good predictor of an individual’s success as an adult.  It is a launching pad and for many simply an experience.  Oftentimes students feel disqualified by the box they fell into in high school.  Sometimes students are placed in those “boxes” because they weren’t ready to make a move, or opportunities were not available or attainable at that time. Regardless of the reason...it’s important for students to remember that:

  • Academics standings will not determine the type of person or professional you will become, sure they can give you a head start, but that is it.

  • Test scores will not determine what kind of impact you will make in the world - poor scores may “disqualify” you from an elite university program - but that will not define you.

  • Athletics will not determine your standing in life. Athletes learn valuable skills, but high school sports are not for everyone for many reasons.

  • Extracurriculars can help you identify passions and/or areas of interest for your future and will definitely look good for college applications and scholarships - but again your participation is not required to be successful.

The high school experience is simply a framework managed for students by parents/guardians, teachers, counselors, and society.  For some this experience is where they start to blossom, for some it’s where they peak, and for others it is where they exist.  The experience depends on the person & the circumstances - good or bad don’t let it define you!

YOU HAVE A PURPOSE and high school may not be the place you find it.  Work with me to start defining your future!

A five year plan for the #BrownOne

Labeled as the #brownone, I was told I was too #ambitious and expected #change too fast!

I was told change would not come for at least five (5) years!

Finally, I feel strong enough to write about being #marginalized at a place of employment, which happens to be an educational institution.  I have been heartbroken from this situation and realize  #gasligthting actually happens.

It happened to me.  It’s real...I lived it for the first time in my professional career!  It happens in the K-12 educational system.

Five years...what happens in five years?

A first grader will be going into middle school...believing they can’t because they are different.

A middle schooler will graduate high school and will be conditioned to believe they can’t achieve because they are different!

Almost an entire generation will be #marginalized in some way.  You don’t believe me?

Ask for the data, see what percent of the student population is succeeding (as we know it).

What percentage is attaining acceptable ACT/SAT scores? (For what they are worth)

What percentage is receiving scholarships?

What percentage is recruited for college sports?

What percentage has a real opportunity?

We all deserve better!

#Standup. #Speakup.

Thanks @jenniferhatmaker for helping me understand.
